20th January 2010 - Information from Guernsey Sailing Trust

Dear Windsurfers

I'm going to give Windsurfing a big push in 2010….. We all know that windsurfing is a great sport and I'd like to see sails on the water like we did in the 80's & 90's.

Open Day

I'll be organising an open day in May as we have done for the last three years. Details follow and I'll let you know soon.

Team 15

We are setting up a Team 15 Club this year. I'm hoping to start after Easter. Please check out this link to find out what it's all about....
http://www.rya.org.uk/programmes/team15/about/Pages/default.aspx
The aim is to give kids a weekly club where they can get out windsurfing. The kit will be there at the beach ready to rig and go.
I thought it may be a good idea to run it on Thursdays as an after school club from 4-6pm just before Thursday racing.
Why I thought it would be good to run on a Thursday:-
-To try and integrate the kids into the windsurfing community.
-They will see expert windsurfers sailing
-Possibility of help to run the club from some of the GBSA members???
-It would be a good introduction to racing… when they are old enough and good enough they could race with the big boys and girls!
If you feel like you would like to help please contact me (you don't have to be an instructor and it doesn't matter how good you are…..at windsurfing).

Instructor Course

Do you fancy becoming an RYA Windsurfing Instructor? I'm hoping to run an Instructor course this Easter.
-It's a 5 day course (or two weekend's ish).
-Minimum age is 16, there's no maximum age!
-Minimum amount of candidates is 3 and maximum is 8
-Its going to cost £100pp. This will go towards getting a trainer over from the UK for a moderation day.
-You will have the opportunity to help with Team 15 and run other courses through the Sailing Trust, or even work for any RYA centre in the World!
-Proposed dates: - 27th-31st March but please let me know if you would like to attend but can't make these dates.
If you would like to find out more then please contact me

Windsurf Lorry

We have kindly been donated a Luton Lorry by Guernsey Electricity and so now have somewhere to store kit safely whilst still being portable. I'm hoping to get permission from the Commons Council to park it up in the car park for the summer holidays. If any one knows how I should approach this then please let me know…. I think it could be difficult.

Sailing Trust Courses

The 2010 courses br /ochure has just been released and our website is having a major face lift so please log on and have a look.
We will be running Kids Windsurfing Summer Holiday courses as usual at Start and Intermediate levels. We will also be running Saturday morning Adult Sessions. So if you know of anyone who wants to learn then please point them in our direction.

Well that's about it from me for now.
Happy Windsurfing and see you out there when it gets a bit warmer.

30th May 2009 - Open day

The 2009 Open Day, after having suffered one postponement due to the weather, was held in great sunshine and a challenging north-easterly wind.

For the morning session of beginners lessons organised by the Guernsey Sailing Trust, the wind blew at force 4. For true beginners it must have been a bit of an interesting start. I missed the morning sessions, but there is a photo in the gallery which proves that at least three were simultaneously upright!

After an excellent lunch-time barbecue, a series of relay races were organised for past and present members, as well as members who are more usually seen riding the big stuff on their short boards. These were grandly titled the “Masters Open” and basically comprised a reach to the centre of the bay, back to a buoy near the shore, back out again, then back to hand over to the next team member. Gybes at each end.

Teams competed on five Prodigy boards, and the 8 ½ metre sails gave enough scope for sailors to display their skill in the wind, which by now was a good 4 to 5.

Five teams of three took part in three races of what was very much a fun event. Other members chose not to race, contenting themselves with sailing their short boards. Racing or not racing, this proved an enjoyable afternoon. Pictures can be seen on the gallery page.

Much thanks are due to the members of the GST and GBSA who organised this successful event, and to all those who contributed by taking part.
